Federal, State, and Community Aid Programs

OBU at New Life Church Students are eligible to apply for federal, state, and community financial aid program. Below is a selected list of available programs. Please keep in mind:

  • Federal and State Aid Programs are subject to the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.
  • The private scholarships listed below are provided for your convenience and not awarded by OBU at NLC. You must apply for these scholarships independently. Additionally, we have provided several scholarship search sites that you may wish to use. While the Student Financial Services office does try to screen the scholarships listed, OBU is not responsible for the information contained on these sites nor the validity of the scholarships. Remember, you should never have to pay to apply for a scholarship.

Federal Aid Programs

Pell Grants - $555-$5,730
Direct Student Loans - up to $6,500; up to $10,500 for Independent Students
Direct Parent Loan (PLUS) - up to full cost

How to Apply

Apply for federal aid listed above by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Applications for the coming school year become available after January 1 each year. You must reapply each year. Applications received prior to June 1 receive funding priority.   (2013 income information is required for the 2014-15 application.)

The Higher Education Amendments require the university to define and enforce standards for satisfactory academic progress to encourage students to successfully complete degree requirements within 4 years (8 semesters).

State of Arkansas Aid Programs

Arkansas Universal Scholarship Application

The Arkansas YOUniversal Scholarship Application is now available online. Arkansas residents should complete this one scholarship application to apply for all Arkansas state scholarships.

Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship

Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship: Arkansas high school students with a 2.5 gpa, 19 ACT and Smart Core Curriculum are eligible to apply. The deadline to complete the Arkansas Universal Scholarship Application to be eligible for the Academic Challenge Scholarship is June 1. There is not an income limit to receive the Academic Challenge, but students must also submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at www.fafsa.ed.gov to receive Academic Challenge.

The current awards are graduated as follows:

$2,000 (1st year)
$3,000 (2nd year)
$4,000 (3rd year)

Go Opportunities Grant

Go Opportunities Grant from the Arkansas Department of Higher Education – $1,000 a year may be available to students who are graduating from an Arkansas High School.   To be eligible a student must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident Alien with a household income that does not exceed $25,000 per year, with an additional $5,000 per year allowed for each additional child. (Example: The maximum annual income of a family with three children would be $35,000.)  For more information you may call 1-800-54-STUDY or visit the website at http://heog.adhe.edu/.  The application deadline date is June 1 for applicants enrolling in the fall term and November 1 for applicants enrolling in the spring term. Program funding is limited.

Governor's Scholars Program

Governor’s Scholars Program – up to $4000 annually for graduating high school seniors based on academic achievement, test score and leadership. The Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship for those scoring 32 on the ACT or 1410 on the SAT, and a 3.50 academic grade point average, or are named National Merit Finalists or National Achievement Scholar pays tuition, mandatory fees, room and board up to $10,000 per year.  These are competitive awards and subject to funding/award limits. The application deadline is February 1 each year.

Arkansas Resident Scholarships

The Arkansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators

AASFAA will award two $500 scholarships to Arkansas students. Application deadline April 1. Complete the AASFAA Scholarship Application and return it as indicated on the form. For more information, you can view the AASFAA scholarship website.[/toggle]

The Arkansas Federation of Garden Club - Awards 1-3 scholarships

AFGC annually totalling around $3,000.  One AFGC applicant will be submitted for the possibility of National Garden Club Scholarship of $3,500. Applicants must be Arkansas residents who will be Junior or Senior undergraduates in the award year and who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need, as well as showing interest in one of several selected majors.  More information can be obtained by visiting the National Garden Clubs website.[/toggle]

Arkansas Game & Fish Conservation Scholarship

Applicants must be Arkansas high school seniors or Arkansas college students pursuing a career in a field related to natural resources conservation with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (4.0 scale). Only resident students paying in-state tuition may apply. For more information and to apply, view the Arkansas Game & Fish website.

Association of AR Counties

Scholarships are available for children, step-children, grandchildren, step-grandchildren of current/retired employees of Arkansas. For more information and to apply, go to the Association of AR Counties website and look for the AAC Scholarship Application in the publications list.

Governor's Commission on People with Disabilities

The Arkansas Governor’s Commission on People with Disabilities will award several student scholarships. Applications are graded by the Scholarship Committee on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, community involvement, goals, and the specific challenges faced by an individual due to disability.  For more information, view the Governor's Special Projects website.

Hammons Charitable Foundation Scholarship Program

Scholarships are available for students from eastern Arkansas and western Tennessee who will be Freshmen or Sophomores at Ouachita. Preference to active members of a Southern Baptist Church and must have a 2.0 or higher GPA. Applications are available on the Arkansas Baptist Foundation website. The deadline to apply is February 1st of each year.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarships

The Horatio Alger Association Scholarships are for current High School Seniors who demonstrate financial need.  There is a national program, as well as state specific programs.  Click on your state on the Horatio Alger website to see state specific scholarship information.

Hot Springs/HSV Symphony Guild Scholarship

Hot Springs area students who are majoring in music are eligible to apply for scholarships ranging from $250 to $3000. For more information and to apply, visit the Symphony Guild website.

Janet Perry Ag Journalism Scholarship

Arkansas residents entering their Junior or Senior year of college, who are planning a career in or related to Agricultural Journalism, can apply for this $2,000 scholarship. Visit the scholarship website for more information.

Medical Missions Scholarship - Due MAR 1
Arkansas Baptists may apply for a scholarship to attend college, seminary, or medical school if they are preparing for Southern Baptist medical missionary service. Applications are available on the Arkansas Baptist Foundation website.

The Mickey and Ross Kelder Scholarship Trust - Due in APR
This scholarship is available to students studying Foreign Language, whether or not it is their major.  For more information or to complete an application, please visit the scholarship website.  Information regarding the Kelder Scholarship is at the bottom of the page.

Oaklawn Foundation Scholarship - Due MAR 1
Any Garland County, AR, resident who will be attending college in the award year is eligible to apply. Criteria considered includes but is not limited to: financial need, community service or school participation and the ability to succeed. To request an application, you will need to call (501) 620-4008 or (501) 321-8193.

Pryor Scholarship
Arkansas Baptists may apply for this scholarship related to educational expenses for those studying in religious education and/or music in order to serve in international or home mission work of the Southern Baptist Convention. For more information, please contact Vera Clancy at vclancy@absc.org.

R. Preston Woodruff, Jr. Scholarship (High School Seniors only) - Due APR 1
The Arkansas Student Loan Authority will give away twenty $1000 scholarships each year to high school seniors in Arkansas. Each year, one of the twenty scholarships drawn will be renewable for 4 years! Go to the Woodruff Scholarship website for more details and to apply.

Ralph G. Norman Scholarship - Due in WINTER
Arkansas residents with a learning disability who are ineligible for SSI or SSD funding can apply for this scholarship.  For more information please visit the Norman Scholarship website.

Red River Baptist Association Seminary Scholarships - Due JUN 1
Arkansas Baptists may apply for a scholarship to attend one of the Southern Baptist seminaries. The online application is available on the Arkansas Baptist Foundation website.

Suttle Seminary Scholarships - Due MAR 1
Arkansas Baptists may apply for a scholarship to attend one of the Southern Baptist seminaries. The online application is available on the Arkansas Baptist Foundation website.

W.P. Sturgis Scholarships - Due in MAY
These are provided to Arkansas residents by the Sturgis Foundation based on satisfactory academic performance and financial need. Information and application forms can be obtained by contacting June Anthony at (870) 246-6514 or  janthony@suddenlink.net.

These web sites contain valuable scholarship and financial aid information. Remember, private scholarship searches require patience and persistence, as well as an early start. These searches are free of charge. Please do not pursue scholarship searches which require a fee for processing your application information!
